One of the most challenging aspects of being a freelance writer is the act of prospecting. Let’s face it; a lot of the skills most valuable for independent contractors aren’t usually brimming over the top in your average writer. You may love writing, but without clients, it’s going to be awfully hard to make a living.
As luck would have it, the skills required to be successful as a freelance copywriter, can be learned. They’re basically habits and activities, which you need to be willing to do poorly at first so you can eventually do them well. Like it or not, your ability to sell and market yourself is more important than your actual skills as a writer.
When it comes to prospecting for copywriting jobs on a freelance basis, there’s no better friend than the trusty telephone. Be it one of those old AT&T models in bright orange like the one my mom had or a tiny mobile that looks like a Borg implant, they all work the same. You call people and you talk to them.
Before picking up the phone, make a list. You can do it on the computer or on a pad of paper. Personally, I use a cheap spiral bound notebook. I get tons of them at the local discount mart after all the back to school promos. They’re dirt cheap, never run out of batters, never need rebooting and you’ll never get into an argument over what operating system they’re running. Write down the names of everyone you know and start making calls.
Here’s the trick: you’re not calling these people to ask them to hire you. You’re networking. These are people you know so treat them like the friends they are. Let them know about your new business venture. Ask them who they know that might need a copywriter. Many business owners need help improving sales and you can help them with your copywriting skills. They’re looking for you, so pick up the phone and increase your chances of being found.

After networking for a bit, you may find that calling is not the chore it felt like when you first started. Create a profile on linkedin.com and start networking online too. Use the summary portion of your profile to explain what you do for others and start searching through the networks.
When it comes to return on investment, there’s no better prospecting tool than your network. It beats ads and cold-calling from the phone book any day of the week. You can do those things too, but never underestimate the power of your network and pick up the phone today.
