Iowa Freelance Photographers
Becoming a Freelance Photographer
Freelance photography is a great way to earn some extra money doing something you love to do. New and improved digital cameras now have the capability of capturing extraordinary photographs and are easily affordable for the average person. There are many great editing tools that are readily available and compatible with any PC to give your photographs that competitive edge even if you are new to freelance photograph.
For those of you who are wondering if a profession in photography is a path you may want to travel let’s first distinguish exactly what freelance photography is. A freelance photographer is someone who provides product (case in point: photograph) on demand. Sometimes you happen to be in the right place at the right time and witness an extraordinary event or person and can capture that on film to fill the demand of a publication after the fact. Other times you may will have a particular assignment in advance that you are to photograph. Either way there are some key points to keep in mind to be a successful freelance photographer.
First, NEVER leave home without your camera! You may be going to the mall and witness a a crime that you can photograph first hand. Local newspapers are always looking for first hand photos for their stories. You could witness some wondrous natural occurrence that is rarely caught on film. Regardless, you if you sell these photographs or not they will be great additions to your portfolio. I have sold photographs that I have taken years prior and that is why it is so important to keep building your portfolio and catalog.
Secondly, persistently and continuously submit your work. You may be rejected fifty times before you are finally picked up but it only take one great photo that an editor notices to start putting you at the top of the viewing list. If you don’t submit you will never get noticed.
Freelance Human Resource or Personnel…
Many newspaper staff photographer I know started out as freelance photographers. They would submit something for every publication until they finally started to become noticed. After a while, more and more of their photograph were published and eventually they were hired as staff photographers. Many professional photographers started out as freelance photographers just as you are now.
The one point I want you to grasp from this article is BE PERSISTENT! Persistently go and photograph all sporting events, concerts, plays, scenery shots, still live, animals, everything so you can build your portfolio. Persistently submit your photographs to every publication you can think of. You will perfect your craft AND start to be recognize as a serious freelance photographer.
