2.Insist their skills be tested
3.Keep them ‘on their toes’ by asking questions
4.Use milestones to divide your project
5.Only outsource what you know
Here in Part 2 of this article, we continue our discussion with detailed explanations for tips number 4 and 5…
4. Break The Project Into Milestones
To make sure your project stays on track, set multiple milestones that lead to your ultimate deadline. Dividing the work into stages not only allows you to manage your time and your freelancer’s performance better, it gives you more control over your cash flow. If you hire your freelancers with this staged approach in mind, you can pay for your project in stages, releasing portions of the owing funds once you’re satisfied, before moving on to the next task.
5. Only Outsource What You Know
Freelancers offshore in places like India and the Philippines can be much more affordable than their North American counter parts. For example, a local freelance programmer might cost $15 per hour where as one from India could cost as little as $4 to $10 depending on their skill level.
Freelance Writers in Winnipeg…
As a rule of thumb, you should only outsource projects offshore that you’re knowledgeable about. So if you don’t know the first thing about programming – and nobody else you work with does – it’s best to keep that project with a local freelancer. It will help avoid the heartache and frustration that invariably follows as a result of misinterpretations and misunderstandings due to either language barriers or lack of technical knowledge on either party’s part.
Hiring a freelancer can be intimidating, but its not impossible to find good people if you go about it carefully and know what to look for. Following the advice that these 5 Tips provide should keep you out of most hot water, and on your way to finding reliable people for almost any project you decide to outsource. It may take a little more time, but the headaches it can save you is worth every minute you spend.
